A STUDY OF HUMIDITY AND ITS EFFECT ON BOND STRENGTH: WHAT DOES IT DO AND WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Authors
Michael J. Melkers, DDS, FAGD

Study Presented at World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry
San Francisco, California August 13, 2004.

This study was conducted with two objectives in mind:
1)To determine the effect of 100% humidity on bond strength;
2)To determine the efficacy of rubber dam and a new isolation device (Isolite by Isolitesystem - USA) onreducing intra-oral humidity levels. The study concluded that under the conditions of this study, application of the dentin bonding agent and placement of the composite resin in the presence of high humidity significantly reduced the mean bond strength to dentin. The clinical significance of this finding is that reducing humidity is important for generating optimum bond strengths to dentinal surfaces.

*A Study ofHumidity and Its Effect on Bond Strength by MichaelJ. Melkers,DDS, FAGD

Key Study Points & Findings
1.The study found that reducing oral humidity is important for generating optimum bond strengths to dentinal surfaces;
2.Under the conditions of this study, both rubber dam and Isolite isolation were found to significantly reduce the relative intra-oral humidity;
3.Under the conditions of this study, average intra-oral humidity with Isolite was reduced at a level equal to, or slightly better than, that achieved with rubber dam isolation;
4.Under the conditions of this study, Isolite was found to be effective in isolation and humidity reduction. Isolite was also found to be versatile for a variety of dental applications;
5.The Primary Investigator (PI) observed that the use of Isolite delivers predictable, practical results which  facilitates 20% - 30% faster procedures.

SPIRITUAL RETREATS ALTER BRAIN'S REWARD, EMOTION CENTERS

A new study sheds light on why people who attend spiritual retreats report greater psychological well-being, after finding that such retreats may increase levels of "feel-good" hormones in the brain.

Researchers from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, found that individuals who attended a spiritual retreat for 7 days experienced changes in the dopamine and serotonin systems of the brain, which boosts the availability of these neurotransmitters.
Dopamine helps to regulate movement and emotional responses, while serotonin helps to control emotion and mood.
Co-author Dr. Andrew Newberg, director of research in the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University, and colleagues say their study provides insight into the emotional impact of spiritual practices.

RAPEX - RAPID ALERT SYSTEM FOR DANGEROUS NON-FOOD PRODUCTS - SISTEMA EUROPEO DI ALLERTA RAPIDA PER I PRODOTTI DI CONSUMO PERICOLOSI

The Rapid Alert System for non-food dangerous products facilitates the rapid exchange of information between national authorities of 31 countries and the European Commission on dangerous products found on the market.

The Commission publishes a weekly overview of the alerts on products reported by the national authorities. They include information on the dangerous products found, the risks identified and the measures taken in the notifying country in order to prevent or restrict their marketing or use. Measures can be ordered by national authorities ("compulsory measures") or be taken directly by producers and distributors ("voluntary measures"). Each alert also includes information on the countries where the same product was found and further measures were taken.

Work smarter, not harder.
We all know that collaboration and communication are key to running a successful, efficient business. Getting there, however, isn’t always easy. With employees, customers, and partners all operating on different productivity and communication tools, it is difficult to streamline processes and actually get work done.

We’ve identified seven ways that moving to cloud-based productivity apps can:
  • Improve your communication and teamwork
  • Increase your company’s mobility
  • Turn data into insights "

MEDICAL DEVICES AND VITRO IN DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL DEVICES REGULATION The European Parliament is expected to adopt the two regulations in April, after which they will be published in the Official Journal

From

WebSite

The recent scandals related to metal-on-metal artificial hips or faulty silicone breast implants have strengthened the case for modernising current rules for medical devices.

On 7 March 2017, the Council adopted new EU rules improving the safety of medical devices for the benefit of patients while preserving a timely access to innovative healthcare solutions.

The two new EU regulations (MDD & IVDMDD):
-provide a stronger mandate to independent notified bodies in their assessment of medical devices before they can be placed on the market, and strengthen the oversight of these bodies by national authorities; the new rules also ensure that notified bodies meet the same high safety standards throughout the EU; these measures will improve the safety of medical devices;
-improve the availability of clinical data on devices and clearly set out manufacturers' responsibilities for the follow-up of the quality, performance and safety of devices placed on the market; this will allow manufacturers to react quickly in the event of concerns being raised and help them improve their devices continuously on the basis of actual data;
-improve the traceability of medical devices throughout the supply chain to the end-user or patient by using a unique identification number; this will allow fast and effective measures to be taken in the event of safety problems;
-set up a central database to provide patients, healthcare professionals and the public with comprehensive information on products available in the EU; this will enable them to make better informed decisions.
