1 DENTAL BUR HOLDER

1.1 Foreword

The dental bur holder is, actually, an ordinary instrument commonly used in dentistry. No one can confer any prestige on it, compared with many other accessories or supports.

We are very often faced with some banal problems, which can complicate our job in a way that we could absolutely avoid.

On our worktop the availability of the burs required for our job, can become into a problem that could prevent us from working with more facility and calm.

Thanks to its characteristics, the silicon bur holder is, nowadays, the most appropriate, compared with all the others put on the market up to now, for the dental surgery use.     

1.2 The bur holder

A bur holder is a service instrument that must let us find out immediately the necessary bur and easily pick it up.

It also has to reduce all the possible problems that may be generated  during sterilization and storage phases, to a minimum.  

The most present on the market bur holders are made by aluminum. The ones made by steel are less present and holders made by plastics and silicon have just recently been introduced on the market, too.

2. WHICH BUR HOLDER SHALL I CHOOSE?

After having read my explanation, it would be easily clear that silicon bur holder would be the best to be chosen, mostly the 35 holes universal ones (which means that they can contain burs with different axle diameters).

First of all, silicon bur holders are holders that don’t cause galvanic effect, which is the ionic transfer effect of metals, caused by the difference of metals with which the burs are built, and the relative aluminum or steel bur holders. Silicon bur holders save burs – and themselves, too – by oxidation and corrosive effects.  

Compared with the plastic bur holders, the food silicon ones have the characteristic not to be toxic, too.

By an operational point of view, which is the most interesting, we can say that silicon bur holders are useful for three reasons at least:

1- Possibility to insert both turbines’ and micromotors’ burs, permitting to prepare a unique bur holder which contains all the necessary burs.

2- Possibility to prearrange operative sets by color distinguished (on the market you can find bur holders with not less than 6 different colors), permitting to organize at most warehousing and timing of intervention and choice;   

3- Prevention by burs accidental falls due to upsetting of the bur holder, which means prevention by possibility of breaking or sterilize one more time burs, thanks to cross holes that you can find on the best silicon bur holders.     

To those three main strong points, apart from prevention of the galvanic effect, we can add that the silicon base has got non-slip properties, which can prevent slipping of the holder on smooth surfaces and can simplify the grasp of the chosen bur with a single hand.

Usually, those bur holders have the possibility to have a low cover, for surgery burs, or a higher cover, for lab burs.

2.1 COSTS

The price difference between silicon bur holders and the metal or plastic ones are none; most of the times silicon bur holder is even less expensive. Economic factor as well goes to silicon bur holder benefit and the operator can easily buy many bur holders with many different colors.

Lastly, its weight is definitely lower than the metal ones or made by different kind of plastics.

This data, apparently not so interesting, becomes emphasized when high quantity shipment, abroad and in Italy as well, are needed. This is another reason to prefer silicon bur holders to all other kinds.
