Diamond rubber polishers use with aesthetic reconstructions of the V class caries

Pubblication nr. 27 – 16th August 2013

Forward
One of the biggest difficulties while finishing and glazing the V class reconstruction is the respect of the mucosa, which most of the times is involved by the burs, discs or rubber polishers for composite.

Strategy
In order to avoid trauma and bleeding of the tissues we thought to finish and glaze the reconstruction using only diamond rubber polishers, which means without using any other rotary instrument.
In particular, we used micro-flame shape.

Diamond Micro flames

Diamond rubber polishers are generally used for ceramic and metal. In this case, the peculiarity of those rotaries have been considered adequate to reach the aesthetic quality and respect of the tissues target.

We have tested different rubber polishers present in the market.
For this procedure, the best have proved to be the ones produced by the Italian company Quasar Dental Equipment.
They have an integral, saturated compound, which means that you can find diamond powder into the whole compound until the axel. They are particularly hard, resistant with a strong anchoring between the compound and the axel specifically studied so that the rubber head won’t separate from the axle, neither if forced.

For the process we have done four light steps, without any pressure or peculiar operations on the surface. It was even possible to make a modeling which simulates the tooth root anatomy as if it was just exposed by the gum.

After the last polymerization we have used the red rubber, polishing and giving a first modeling

                                                                      Coarse grain - red

Then we used the green micro-flame making with it a better finished modeling

Medium grain - green

The third, yellow and the forth, gray ones were useful to build a perfect glazing on the reconstruction without provoking any bleeding of the mucosa.

Fine grain - yellow

              Extra fine grain – griseous

The result of this “experimentation” has been fully satisfying .

Summary
The execution of V class reconstructions can cause gum bleeding and so micro trauma of the tissue.

The use of diamond rubber polishers for the finishing and glazing of the aesthetic reconstructions made with composite materials, even if they were born to be used with ceramic and metal, is a success strategy.

After the end of the operation, the result has been fully satisfying for at least three reasons:

1-    The final aesthetic of the reconstruction glazing was excellent;
2-    The finishing and bright grazing of the reconstruction has been particularly easy to carry out;
3-    The most important thing to underline is that we could work in the cervical area without provoking suffering or bleeding of the mucosa.
