La cannula aspira saliva tradizionale come noto ha almeno tre grossi problemi: 1 l'aspirazione  provoca  frequentemente  il ferimento dei tessuti molli del paziente a causa dell'aspirazione di questi o a causa della fuoriuscita del filo metallico dal tubo; 2 la capacità di aspirazione in molti casi è insufficiente; 3 se si vuole un'aspirazione accettabile nel punto esatto in cui serve, o semplicemente affinché non cada dalla bocca, l'assistente, o il dentista, deve mantenere in posizione la cannula, si trova così con una mano occupata e di conseguenza non può svolgere agevolmente altre funzioni. Un altro grosso problema è la sterilità. La cannula aspira saliva monouso è venduta "pulita", cioè  non sterile,   non disinfettata.
