Consumer safety
European legislation ensures a consistent, high level of protection for the health and safety of consumers by means of strict common safety rules and standards forproducts and services circulating within the internal market.
Products placed on the market are subject to general safety requirements covered mainly byGeneral Product Safety Directive (GPSD) 2001/95/EC. On the other hand, certain products whose composition, manufacture or use may pose a risk to consumers are subject to more specific provisions.
A market surveillance system and the Rapid Alert System for non-food dangerous products (RAPEX) allow dangerous products to be quickly withdrawn from the market, preventing further risks to consumers.
This European Commission is actively cooperating with relevant partners and stakeholders, olso on international level.
The section covers also safety requirements for cosmetic products and links to requirements for medical devices.
